Food Preparation and Serving


The Food Service Worker is responsible to the Food Service Coordinator for serving food, dishwashing and other related duties. They are also responsible to aid with food preparation under the cook’s direction.




  1. Able to operate kitchen utensils and equipment safely and efficiently.
  2. Able to work in an environment that is subject to temperature change.
  3. Able to tolerate standing and lifting throughout the work day.
  4. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  5. Must be open to new knowledge and changes in the health care and food service fields.
  6. Must be able to relate, communicate and co-operate effectively with staff, residents, residents’ families and the public.
  7. Must be able to exhibit maturity, good judgment and flexibility.
  8. Exhibit and maintain a high standard of professional knowledge appearance, behaviour and attitude.
  9. Possess physical and mental capabilities to provide quality resident care.
  10. Must show genuine concern for the elderly.
  11. Knowledge of basic nutrition and special diet needs of individual residents.



  1. Must be able to work early and late shifts as required.
  2. Be available every other weekend as required.
  3. Available to work 7.5 hour shifts or less as required.




  1. Report to cooks regarding resident conditions, eating habits or other information.
  2. Read, record and log information as required.
  3. Follow all sanitation and infection control procedures are required.
  4. Prepare hot and cold beverages.
  5. Serve and assist with serving of meals, beverages and other related duties.
  6. Clean-up dishes from dining room, scrape and rinse prepare for dishwasher.
  7. Load and run dishwasher according to procedure.
  8. Pot scrubbing as required.
  9. Empty dishwasher, stack and store dishes and cutlery appropriately.
  10. Set-up dining room as required.
  11. Store foods in appropriate containers at proper temperatures.
  12. Provide refreshments to residents as required.
  13. Clean and sanitize equipment as required.
  14. Perform other related duties as may be assigned from time to time.




  1. Prolonged standing and walking.
  2. Lifting and moving of equipment and supplies.
  3. Exposure to resident elements through regular resident contact.
  4. Some stress resulting from dealing with resident care needs and time pressures.
  5. Some use of visual and auditory sense in monitoring condition of residents during care.




  1. Lifting alone, maximum 50 lbs. (5-25 usual)
  2. Pushing, pulling contents that weigh a maximum of 100 lbs. (20-50 usual) as a major job function.
  3. Stretching/reaching on a regular frequency as an essential job function.
  4. Walking as a major job function.
  5. Standing, for lengths of time, up to 3 hours maximum, (1-2 hrs usual) as a major job function.
  6. Bending, stooping for short periods of time as a minor job function.
  7. Crouching/kneeling for short periods of time as a minor job function.
  8. Carries and transports objects of various sizes, to a maximum of 25 lbs. (5-15 usual) as a minor job function.
  9. Must have visual and hearing acquity to recognize the need of assistance required by the residents.




  1. Is aware of the employee’s responsibilities and follows all health and safety program and departmental manuals.
  2. Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers and residents.
  3. Is alert to and promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations to immediate supervisor. Does not operate or use faulty equipment.
  4. Wears personal protective equipment (or clothing) as required by the task, MSDS, or facility policy.
  5. Promptly reports personal injury to supervisor and seeks first aid as required.
  6. Participates in fire safety demonstrations and fire drills, and knows the facility fire and disaster plan.


Food Service Workers shall possess the Food Service Worker qualification from a recognized program. Safe food handling certification shall be kept current and other mandatory training provided by the employer shall be undertaken as necessary.
